Recursively downloading files from GenomeSpace

Recently a GenomeSpace user asked us how to recursively download all of the files in a directory.  In this case, recursively means that they wanted to get everything from a folder, its subfolders, and their subfolders all the way down.  The GenomeSpace UI itself will allow you to download every file in a directory,  but it does not go into the subfolders within a directory - you still have to go to each of them one at a time.

To make this easier we created an application you can use to log in to GenomeSpace, select a top level GenomeSpace directory where you want to start the download, and it will walk down the directory tree, copying the entire file and directory structure to your computer.

You can download this application from the SharedData/Utilities/GSRecursiveDownloader folder on GenomeSpace.

To use it, follow these steps;

  1. Download  SharedData/Utilities/GSRecursiveDownloader/GSRecursiveDownloader.zip
  2. Unzip this file on your computer where you want the files downloaded to.
  3. Double-click the GSRecursiveDownloader.jar file
    • On a Mac, you may need to right-click, select 'open' and tell the OS it's OK to run
    • Alternatively run  "java -jar GSRecursiveDownloader.jar" and you will be able to see the progress of the downloads.
  4. Login to GenomeSpace
  5. Select the top level directory you want to copy
  6. Click the 'Save From" button.

Thats it!
